On this day in U.S. Military history - July 18, the first major battle between Union and Confederate land armies took place at various engagements around the Town of Manassas located near Bull Run Creek on the dates of July 18th through July 21st. The Union Army was decisively defeated and the local observers from Washington, D.C. that drove their horses down to the battlefield relayed the news back that winning the war was not going to be easy at all.
